The short version

Coffee is one of the best first Vietnamese practice situations because the script is predictable. You only need three moves: order the drink, adjust the sweetness or ice, then ask for take-away or the bill.

The cafe script

Use this simple order:

  1. Một ly cà phê sữa đá - one iced milk coffee.
  2. Ít đường thôi - less sugar, please.
  3. Mang đi or uống ở đây - take away or drink here.
  4. Tính tiền giúp - bill, please.

You do not need a long sentence. In a busy cafe, short and clear is better.

Southern Vietnamese note

Southern cafe speech is often short and relaxed. You may hear staff ask uống đây hay mang đi? meaning “drink here or take away?” Answer with uống ở đây or mang đi. Keep the rhythm steady; do not rush through the tone marks in cà phê sữa đá.

How to practice today

  1. Save Một ly cà phê sữa đá and Ít đường thôi.
  2. Say the full order three times slowly.
  3. Cover the Vietnamese and recall the phrase from the English meaning.
  4. Review it tomorrow from the practice page.

Common mistakes

Do not say a long English-style sentence like “I would like to have one iced milk coffee please” word by word. Vietnamese cafe orders are usually shorter. Also, do not drop the tone marks in sữa and đá. If the tones are unclear, the drink name becomes harder to catch.

Next step

Open the coffee phrasebook next and save the exact drink order you would use this week. The goal is not to read every drink name. The goal is to walk into a cafe and successfully order one thing.

Fill the blank

Quick practice

Fill the blank: ___ đường thôi means “less sugar, please.”
